Setting a custom drag image for HTML5 drag and drop

After some playing around, I found myself annoyed by HTML5 drag and drop not being able to set a custom image when dragging in the way I wanted it to. Some more analysis and a solution, which will likely make you be sick, at Setting a custom drag image for HTML5 drag and drop.

Is this a bug that this is impossible or difficult? It’s not clear. What’s a “visible” element? It’s hard to argue that Chrome is wrong here, although that is faintly like a town councillor who takes a lip-smacking pleasure in following all the rules to the letter like the officious git that he is.

So, horrible hacks ftw. Better solutions are invited. Please.
