The end of LugRadio
LugRadio is ending.
Yep. After 106 shows, two million downloads, five thousand emails, 134 hours of recorded material, five conferences, and fourteen presenters*, LugRadio is coming to an end. I’ve just released “More on that later”, episode 21 of season 5, which is the antepenultimate (!) episode. We’ve got one more “ordinary” episode after this, and then the live show at LugRadio Live UK on the 19th and 20th July in Wolverhampton, and that’s it.
There’ll be a certain amount of reminiscence at LRL in a couple of weeks, but this might be a good place for me to talk a bit about everything that’s gone on. It’s been a pretty cool ride, I have to say. We talked to loads of people, shone a spotlight on loads of projects, won an award for marketing and been elected best podcast in a magazine, done LRL in America and four times in the UK, and basically had a great laugh doing it. I’m really proud of what we’ve done. And now it’s ending. A sad moment.
I probably ought to say: it isn’t because we’ve had a row or anything. We want the show to go out on a high — always leave ‘em wanting more, isn’t that the showbiz mantra? — and everyone can name programmes that have outstayed their welcome by stringing it out for just one more season. I would like to keep those people who don’t think that we jumped the shark 104 shows ago to be still thinking that the show was good even after it’s over.
So, this is it, kids. This show, one more show, and then the live show at LugRadio Live. That’s our chance to say thankyou to all the people who’ve made the show what it is, and your chance to see the last ever LugRadio recording live on stage. Drop us an email or post to the forums to tell us what you’ve liked and disliked about the last four years and what you want to see us talk about at LRL, and come and celebrate the end of an era with us. There’s going to be rather a few drinks that weekend: make sure some of them are yours. I’ll see you there.

Wow, I’m a bit shocked by this, I didn’t know you guys were considering it but I can understand your reasons. I’ve enjoyed the show immensely since I discovered it late in Season 2. Thanks for all the laughs and great entertainment over the years. You lot were the main inspiration for us in starting our podcast and we’ll miss you.
I think you’d better inform the local hospital to keep some beds at the ready for you guys after all the pints we an others will be buying you at LRL, maybe this was the plan ;)

Seriously lads, thanks for all the fun and giggles in the past, as well as the thought provoking bits. I hope maybe you’ll all get on the guest lists for the other podcasts , (like old politicians get on the public speaking circuit) and tell these youngsters how to do it right.

Every two weeks, for the past 4 years, the award winning LugRadio team put out a podcast talking about the latest linux / oss news and having very colourful discussions about their very polarised views on all things linux. They have even had live week…

I wish I had been there from the beginning, but I have only been listening for the last 2 series, will really miss the strange looks whilst chuckling on the train.

Stuart, you and the other presenters have done an incredible job with LugRadio. It was one of the clear inspirations for me when I started the Linux Reality podcast in early 2006. Having just ended Linux Reality at episode #100 a few months ago, I can totally understand where you all are coming from and going out on a high note is always better than jumping the shark. :-)

Sorry to hear it go. I have been a faithful listener since season 1 episode one. My dreams of sparks coming back will never happen. I was grateful to speak at LRL US and hope to see you guys at other conferences like SCALE.

Does this mean the end of LRL too? I’ve attended every year so far and they combined a fun atmosphere with some outstanding speakers. I tip my hat to you for organising these and for (inadvertently) putting the West Midlands on the global Linux stage. Surely Wolverhampton will just fade into obscurity now?!

Bah as I said in Jono’s I blame myself, whenever I discover something and like it, it goes away…
Just found LUG Radio in May when I got my Nokia N800 and have been tearing through the back catalog (after getting OGG support working in it, since I love freedom) at a fever pitch, and am at S5 E12 only to have this happen…. I’m going to go live in a cave so that others no longer have to suffer due to my liking great stuff.
