I probably ought to note that saying that Jono went to flickr because he hates freedom was much more a dig at Jono than it was a dig at flickr ;-)

pscoop: agreed. Web apps fall, for me, into a category of "if I can use a Free one I will try and do so, but it's not going to stop me using Google to search the web". Hence me looking around for Free photo hosting; if I hadn't been able to find any, I'd have probably used Flickr.

At FOSDEM a couple of years ago RMS was specifically asked about software freedom and web apps and he said that as far as he was concerned it was about the software on your own computer - what google, or yahoo, or whomever want's to run on their computer is their business (and ther freedom) but not about yours even if you're accessing their service.

Of course this doesn't have to be your vision of software freedom, and it would seem it isn't, but it's interesting where we each draw the line. For example, unless it's very old, your car is running some (perhaps even quite a lot) of software - is that entirely free? (Unlike photo hostin you're unlikely to have a choice of a car with Free software).

While Flickr might not be Free software they do at least believe in free data (despite a little wobble when Zooomr came along) and allow customers and even competitors extract all of the photo data and metadata (tags, etc).

foaf: I've also painted my nails black and put on a Manic Street Preachers album, of course. Swings and roundabouts.

Actually, I'd forgotten that Motorcycle Emptiness was actually quite good. LJ: good for source, bad for self-harming.

[...] fspot2lj is for exporting your F-Spot photos to your LiveJournal photo hosting at pics.livejournal.com. It’s not yet finished, but it works well enough to have exported all my photos and resize them all to 800×600 at the same time. It pays attention to F-Spot tags and creates LiveJournal galleries from them. [...]
