Proactive engineers

Overheard during a conversation at work today (don’t know who was being talked about, but it was someone external):

He’s a nice guy, but he’s not really a pro-active engineer.

I think I’d rather be a nice guy.

  1. Believe it or not, I was actually placed on one month probation at my last job for not being Pro-Active enough. When I asked my bosses how they would assess whether I’d become *more* proactive at the end of the probation… they went into the next room, and came back with: “We’ll let you know”.

    I quit the next week.

  2. Nonsence, every engineer should fix problems before they are even known about. Goes with the job, doesn’t it?
