Broadcom wireless working in Ubuntu Edgy

My Broadcom bcm4318 wireless card is now working properly in Ubuntu, by which I mean that it’ll get a DHCP address and doesn’t require loads of weird hacks and fail half the time. Well done the bcm43xx Linux driver people!

  1. My broadcom bcm4306 starts to work with the bcm43xx drivers, and then cuts out every two minutes or so, driving me completely batty.

Furthermore, you won’t get 54m/s until you switch back to ndiswrapper. Come to the dark side!

First: nope. Free Software all the way. I’ve done without wireless for the last six months precisely because the Free drivers didn’t work :)

Second: 54Mbps isn’t any kind of big motivator for me, because my home network is only 10Mbps anyway ;)

  3. Incidentally, I haven’t so far noticed any cut-outs. If I do I shall (a) be annoyed and (b) switched back to wired ethernet. The driver doesn’t work with NetworkManager yet anyway afaict.

  4. OK, now cutouts are noticed. If I go away and leave it for a day, when I come back the wireless has stopped working. So I am annoyed, and I’ve switched back to wired ethernet. Still, at least it works for a bit, so I can go wireless if I need to.

  5. Seems to work better for you than it did for me. Maybe it was something to do with my network being 54 mbps? Either way, enjoy your ubuntu.

I’m really glad to be back on linux, wireless was a dealbreaker for me previously.

  6. What annoys me is that network manager doesn’t work. I too use BCM 4318 and it doesn’t really cut out as long as I do it without network manager. It doesn’t detect any networks, so I have to enter them manually, unless I’m using network manager. It’s not even listed on the driver website (it’s an AirForce One 54g). I’m going to email the guy with the specifics of this model and it’s behaviour and cross my fingers for new releases. I kind of like the idea of ndiswrapper in that it might help it stop being so weird, but it’s a hassle and what I’ve got at the moment works well enough (as long as I don’t use network manager). I’m just interested, since you have the same chipset, do you get those same symptoms?
