We’ve been having a few bots spamming the Jokosher forums, by registering an account and posting a spam post. To that end, I’ve applied the Easy BotStopper mod, which adds a (simple but apparently quite effective) wrinkle to the signup process. It’s a Club solution, but, as famously said by the desert traveller in the Nike trainers, I don’t have to outrun the lion, I just have to outrun you. Let’s hope it puts enough of a barrier in front of phpbb spambots to keep us ahead of the game for another few months.
If you have any suggestions for ways to stop spam on phpbb installations that don’t involve captchas, I’d be interested in hearing them; we’ve already disabled anonymous posting in addition to the mod above.
We’ve been fighting this problem with the autopackage forums for years, no such luck. A lot of bots don’t post at all, they merely register accounts with their home page linking to some spammy website. I don’t know why … presumably somewhere there is a “view all users” link that Googlebot can find.

Mike: there is (”Memberlist”) at the top. The BotStopper mod adds a wrinkle to signups, thus helping with both accounts-for-spam-website-links and accounts-to-post-spam; it’ll only work as long as the bots don’t start correcting for it, but we’re ahead of the game currently.

I’ve written [1]phpBB Antispam HOWTO, which I update regularly. Also, [2]my site links to several threads on phpbb.com, in which the problem of phpBB spam is discussed a lot.
Hope it helps.

[...] Goodness me. Today for the first time I approved a comment which Wordpress had marked (well, Akismet had marked) as possibly spam. It was about spam, mind. [...]

Hi Everyone,
I have a carpet cleaning business in Houston,TX that was doing pretty good until the economy went bad, and with it my clientele. I have a website for the business but I dont
know what I have to do the get it to show up in a search. Right now it’s somewhere in the yahoo/google netherworld (LOL).
Is there someone on here that can give me some insight or know of anyone that coud give me insight on how I can get my local website on the front
page of a Yahoo or Google search to increase my business without it costing me 5 or 10k $$$? If so please share with me.
I thank you and my hungry over-eating children thank you.
thanks,
