Unless you are the richest person alive, it’s a pretty safe bet that I now have at least as many pianos as you do, and probably more, by which I mean that I have one piano. Tragically, they failed to deliver piano-playing ability to our house along with the instrument, so we’re currently limping through one-finger playing and stopping after every note to work out what the next one is. Pointers to excellent references and tutorials (on the net or off it) or suggestions for how people with no previous piano-playing experience at all should learn are greatly welcomed. Sam wants to play Christmas carols; I want to be Fats (ha!) Domino and play blues and jazz.

Yeah, I thought of piano lessons. The flaw there is, if I basically turn out to be no good at it, or I turn out to get bored by it, it’ll cost me a couple of hundred quid to find that out…

Learn to do a simple 12 bar blues, which my brother taught me and is (besides some early recorder lessons) the basis of my vast musical talent. I can teach you if you aren’t infuriating to teach. It has the following advantages: it is the basis of most blues, jazz, and rock (e.g. everything the Stones did, although I’m sure that’s not selling it to you), there’s no need to read music, and it gets you using chords, which is what makes a piano interesting. I think you can play a single finger version of The First Noel by starting on a C and going straight up and down the keys, i.e. without skipping any. We have an 80s small-key Yamaha keyboard: I bet your piano doesn’t have a helicopter noise on it. Ha! I assume the instrument is ultimately for Niamh’s benefit.

Let me know if you make any progress with this. I have a piano in my living room doing nothing but sitting there and trying to be a piece of furniture.

did u kno all my mates r like ded gd at piano and ALWAYS go on about it ALL THE TIME! but they have lessons as i do – but u can teach urself if u RELE want to learn
