nvFAQ article: Who would Zubrette have married?

> Who do you think Zubrette (the one in the book) would have married if
> Garion and Doroon hadn't left Faldor's Farm?
The thing about Zubby is - right from word one - she is directly contrasted with our beloved Queen Ce`.

"She ruled them as a little queen, playing one against the other and inciting them into little fights. She was quite heartless and at times each of the three boys hated her even while remaining helpless thralls to her tiniest whim."

Sounds a bit like Ce` playing Mandy and Garion off later in MG :) And I think DE wants us to see some kind of parity between the girls in Garion's life.

Zubs, in PoP, is heartless, cajoling, pretty, charming, a good liar and all things Garion, Doroon and Rundorig wanted. Garion won her affections because he gave her sweets ... who knows what the other two lads offered. Ce` likes gifts too - remember her shopping lists - and all of these adjectives can surely be attributed to her too!

Garion doesn't think Zub brave enough to sleep on the ground, tho' and he believes she needs someone who would devote his entire life to her ... I think Garion would have been that person if he had stayed at Faldor's Farm. He would have made an excellent farmer (according to Polgara) and I imagine he would have enjoyed Zub more and more as she grew up and took responsibility for her life. She is, in many ways prepared to do that - she waited for Garion to return after all and is ready to leave with him.

My problem with all this is that we are only getting a look at Zubs when she is fifteen - she hasn't grown up really and left behind her selfish attitudes and churlish inconsiderations. Zubs the older, is a happyily married mother with a houseful of children to love and care for. She rules that environment just like Ce` does at Riva - taking care of her husband and making all the important decisions :)

Doroon would have driven her mad with all his chatter. At least Garion (and Rundorig) knew when to shut up and be persuaded that kissing her was a good idea :)
